Ensuring A Smooth Liposuction Result

If you are contemplating a liposuction procedure, it is essential that you familiarize yourself with the procedure itself and the options that the surgeon has available to him or her.

Liposuction gets rid of the unwanted fat in the areas that can be next to impossible to “diet away”, such as the abdomen, love handles, and saddlebags. Seems easy enough, right? Well, unfortunately, sometimes patients end up with less fat, but oftentimes are left to deal with uneven and lumpy results. For a smoother result, your surgeon may consider using a thinner liposuction cannula, or tube for optimal results.

Tools of the liposuction trade

The instrument that surgeons use to remove the fat from the body is known as a cannula. It is a long, slender tube used to insert under the skin to basically suck out the unwanted fat. These cannulas come in different sizes, classified by the size of the tube, or cannula. Because liposuction has been in existence for over 25 years, experience has deemed that the best size cannula to use for the best results is 3 millimeters in diameter. By using the small size, the surgeon is ensured that no defects are left in the tissue where fluid and blood may accumulate. Uneven scarring is what causes any irregularities in contour.

Additionally, the tip of the cannula has small holes. It is through these holes that the fat is sucked through to exit the body. Although it is faster to have these holes a larger size, smaller holes insure a smoother result. You are basically working against yourself if the cannula is small and the holes are big. The large holes can result in fluid accumulation and scarring.

Topifoam

Topifoam pads act as a splint. They are placed under the compression garment you will wear immediately after surgery. They are placed right next to your skin, holding it smoothly in place. This is a very important part of your liposuction procedure.

Compression Garment

For the first two weeks after your surgery, you will be instructed to wear a postoperative compression garment. It should be tight, but not too tight and should not be able to move or kink up when you move. During the first 5 days post op this garment must not be removed for even 5 minutes. This is essential for ultimate results.

As you can clearly see, there are definite dos and don’ts involved in getting liposuction. Following a doctor’s orders and getting as much information as you can is essential to obtaining ultimate results.
