23 Nov Fillers and Neurotoxins….A Match Made In Heaven
When we hear the words Botox, dermal fillers, and Dysport, we definitely don’t think of famous couples, like Bogie and Bacall or great combinations like chocolate and wine. However, just like those pairings, Botox and dermal fillers go together like peanut butter and jelly.
When these two injectables are used simultaneously, magic happens. Many refer to this tandem usage as a “liquid facelift”. It makes perfect sense, because most candidates who are fighting the lines and wrinkles are also experiencing early volume loss in their cheeks, lips and nasolabial folds. Dermal fillers address the loss of volume while the neurotoxins can take care of the lines and furrows.
How dermal injectable fillers work
Dermal fillers are used to rejuvenate the face by literally “filling in” the volume loss and plumping up areas such as the cheeks, lips and nasolabial folds. Dermal fillers are similarly used under the eyes to decrease hollowness. For this, hyaluronic fillers like Juvederm Ultra, Restylane or Perlane get the job done. They usually last up to 12 months. Adverse effects are minimal and the bonus is that they can be reversed with the enzyme hyaluronidase, if the patient is unhappy with the results.
How neurotoxin injections work
Neurotoxin injections are very different from fillers. Their purpose is to smooth out expression wrinkles by blocking nerve signals going to the muscles, when the nerve can no longer contract, the furrows and lines soften. Generally, it is used on the frown lines on the forehead, crow’s feet and other areas.
A combination of dermal fillers and Botox
Of course, there are people who will only need one or the other, but for the vast majority they will benefit from this combination, as for some, it is a dream come true.
As with any cosmetic procedure, make certain you are in the hands of a skilled professional. Also, make sure that you are clear on your personal concerns and that your doctor is clear on the issues that you want addressed.
