What’s The Lowdown On Botox?

There’s a lot of things we can control in life…the frown lines we have earned over the years is not one of them, and that’s why, thankfully, there is Botox.

Wrinkles develop as we age and Botox is here to help

We can try to go through life not ever getting angry, not ever frowning at the trash that wasn’t taken out, or the dog that dug up your azalea. But let’s face it, that’s not going to happen. What will happen is, over time, the furrows will get deeper and the lines more pronounced. So why not help yourself now and stave off those worry and anger lines with Botox?

What exactly is Botox?

Botox is a drug that is derived from a neurotoxin that is produced by the bacterium Clostridium Botulinum called botulinum toxin. It is used medically to treat certain muscular conditions and to cosmetically remove wrinkles by essentially paralyzing targeted muscles.

Neurotoxins are sold commercially under the names:

  • Botox
  • Dysport
  • Xeomin
  • Myobloc

How does it work on wrinkles?

Wrinkles in the skin are a direct result of action of the facial muscles. Botox prevents the muscles from contracting and with this paralyzes the wrinkles and furrows. They virtually are eliminated and ultimately are softened because of lack of constant contraction of the muscles controlling that area of your face.
Additionally, if these muscles are paralyzed, new wrinkles will not develop.

Any side effects from Botox?

A neuromodulator such as Botox, has very little side effects. A patient may experience bruising or a mild hematoma and perhaps some swelling in the site of the injection. Occasionally, a mild headache may follow the injection. On average, Botox lasts between 4-5 months. However, for patients who are on a regular schedule of Botox injections, the interval between injections becomes longer.
