10 Mar Defying Gravity and Maintaining a Youthful Appearance
Scottsdale Plastic Surgeon Dr. Shaun Parson
Here on earth, gravity affects everything around us. It is constant, unforgiving, and monotonous. As long as this planet remains in existence, gravity will always be touching everything. Life style, habits and health play major roles in how fast our skin tends to age. What can we do to help slow down the process?
Preventative Plastic Surgery
First, preventative maintenance is what I like to call it. I am sure you have heard of Botox and Dysport. These injections relax the wrinkles on your face (with results that can last up to 4 months) it also turns out that they can weaken the muscle over time, so creases like those in your brow line and crow’s feet after time might not even appear. Starting these injections at an early age could help reduce the sign of wrinkles as you age. Next, facial fillers; hydroponic acid fillers such as Juvederm, Restylane add fullness to your face and plump out lines so they are less noticeable, these can last up to 12 months. There is also a new FDA-approved facial filler called, Voluma. It is not only able to restore lost volume but the clinical studies have shown it to last up to 2 years.
Facial Massage
Additionally, here are a few things that don’t cost any money, pain-free and have been shown to help your skin look softer, brighter and younger. First, give yourself a facial massage. We all know working out tones muscles in your body and makes your skin firmer. This holds true to your face as well. When applying your moisturizer to your face during your daily skin regiment, take some time to massage it into your face always “defying gravity” and rubbing upward toward your hairline. Then, make sure you are not only getting enough sleep at night (6-8 hours) but that you are not mushing your face against your pillow as you sleep. If you sleep on your stomach the compression between the pillow and your skin can cause distinct lines on your face and neck. If you are a stomach sleeper and just can’t get a good night sleep on your back, try changing your pillowcase to a silk material. Some experts believe this type of fabric creates less friction the cotton.
Skin Elasticity
Last, make sure your eating habits are not working against your skin elasticity. Drink lots of water, some experts suggest half your body weight in ounces a day. Don’t put your body through extreme or crash dieting. Loosing too much weight too quickly can not only have an effect on your health, but affect the volume in your face creating thinning of the fat pads in your cheeks, lower eyelids and temples, which in time can loosen your skins elasticity on your face. Eat foods rich in Vitamin C, protein and zinc. Don’t over indulge in simple carbs, candy and of course alcohol.
