09 Aug Use These Questions to See if Breast Augmentation Might Be for You
Breast augmentation is a big decision that requires months of consideration, research, and planning. Around the world and at Dr. Shaun Parson Plastic Surgery & Skin Center, breast augmentation has long been one of the most popular of cosmetic surgeries. It is the only way to increase the size of the breasts and improve their shape and profile. There are various types of breast surgery including breast augmentation (which requires breast implants), a breast lift, and breast reduction. If you are thinking about breast augmentation surgery, there are a few questions to ask yourself as you begin this journey.
Should I get silicone or saline breast implants?
It’s completely up to you and both are quite popular. Each have benefits, such as the fact that saline breast implants are inserted into the chest “empty” and then filled with saline, which allows for a smaller incision. However, silicone breast implants are thought to be more natural-feeling to a lot of people.
What breast implant size is best for you?
This is also unique for each patient, but a reputable surgeon will recommend the best size (measured in ccs) for your goals and body. Bringing in pictures of breast sizes and shapes that you like, especially if the person has a similar body shape and size to you, is a great way to get started when you do schedule a consultation.
Which shape looks best?
There are two primary shapes: teardrop and round. Teardrop shapes have been trending in recent years as more and more women prefer a natural look. However, there are still lovers of the round shape that was highly prevalent in the 1990s. Again, photos of breasts that you like will help determine the right shape for you.
Does breast implant texture matter?
In recent years, there has been yet another addition to the options available when it comes to breast implants—texture. You can choose between smooth and textured breast implants. Smooth is standard, but textured breast implants do have their benefits because they “stick” in place by creating a good kind of mild scarring. This can be helpful for those who choose teardrop breast implants and want to ensure the implants won’t rotate. Rotation is not an issue with round implants, but can be problematic for teardrop shapes.
Above or below the chest muscles?
You also have a choice in terms of where exactly the implants are placed. They can be either above or below the chest muscles. Above the chest muscles is a somewhat less invasive surgery with less downtime. Below the chest muscles allows for a more secure placement and can help make breast implants look even more natural in slender patients. However, this comes with a more aggressive surgery and a slightly extended downtime.
How well can breast augmentation incisions be hidden?
The exact placement and length of your incisions will vary considerably based on the kind of implants you choose, the size, your body, and whether or not you would benefit from a breast lift coupled with the breast augmentation. One of the most common incision placements is the simple anchor, which is hidden easily in the natural breast crease and may also include a vertical incision from the center of the crease up to the bottom of the nipple. There’s also the lollipop incision that is used when the nipples need to be moved (particularly if a breast lift is also included). This requires an incision completely around the areola followed by the anchor incision. Additional incisions may be possible, such as an incision in the armpit, and this is something to discuss with your surgeon.
Is breast augmentation safe?
Yes, generally speaking breast augmentation is a relatively safe cosmetic surgery. These surgeries have been performed for decades. Recent headlines related to “breast implant illness” actually refer to very small and specific types of breast implants, and even in these cases it only happened in a small number of patients. There are inherent risks with any surgery, all of which can be discussed with a reputable surgeon.
There is no specific timeline for how long implants last. Many women choose to change their implants after about 10 – 15 years to align with evolving lifestyles and preferences. If you have been thinking about breast augmentation surgery, beginning your journey with education and solid information is always best. Take a look at photos of celebrities who have an aesthetic you like and tuck these photos away for future consultation.
