02 Feb How Common Are Silicone Breast Implant Ruptures?
When a woman is contemplating getting breast implants, they, of course, have many questions that need to be answered. One very common problem that women have is if it is at all common for silicone breast implants to rupture.
Of course, this is never part of the plan, but yes, silicone breast implants have been known to rupture, however, is not commonplace. When a separation does occur, it is more than likely due to fatigue. Breast implants were never intended to last a lifetime and many times women forget this fact. When this type of rupture occurs, the good news is that the silicone will most likely remain contained in the fibrous capsule that envelops the implant.
Should you suspect a rupture, your surgeon should be contacted, and an examination should take place. It is not, nor should it be considered an emergency. However, having said that, the breast implants should not remain for a prolonged period.
In doing so, there would be a chance that leakage into the lymph nodes and/or surrounding tissue could become a possibility.
When the surgeon removes the ruptured implants, removing the breast capsule as well may be needed. In most cases, new implants can be placed during this procedure.
The big takeaway here is to realize when you decide to have breast implant surgery, that it is not a one and done procedure. Most surgeons would want to do an exam at 10-year post op.
