28 Mar 4 Types of Injectables You Need to Know
We often hear about “Botox and fillers,” but this duo is actually a catchall phrase for a variety of injectables. Parson Skin Center offers all of the safest, most effective injectables to achieve your goals, so let’s go over four of the most popular types. First, there’s Botox. Botox is a brand of neuromodulator that can either train muscles that cause lines and wrinkles to be weak or freeze those muscles temporarily so they stop causing lines, creases, and wrinkles. If you’re in your 20s and interested in preventative care, “baby Botox” (a small amount of Botox) might be for you. Those in their 30s or better usually use Botox to treat existing wrinkles (but it still works to train muscles, too).
However, Botox just happens to be the best-known type of neuromodulator. There’s also Dysport, which works very similarly to Botox and is comprised of the same ingredients. Increasingly, new neuromodulators are also gaining in popularity. One is not necessarily better than the other, but many of the newer options are designed to just treat a few areas (usually between the brows—which Botox can also treat). When clients ask for “Botox,” we know what they’re really asking for is an injectable that prevents and/or treats unwanted lines and wrinkles.
Fillers for All
Dermal fillers are usually comprised of a synthetic form of hyaluronic acid (HA), which is already found in the body. There are many reputable makers of dermal fillers, and within each of these lines there are different types of fillers. Slight changes to the make-up of HA fillers can make them more suitable for different body parts such as the lips, cheeks, under the eyes, temples, jawline, and tops of the hands. Thus, the term “lip filler” or “cheek filler” is actually just a dermal filler that has been designed for that body part in mind.
HA fillers are by far the most popular type of dermal filler, but there are other options, too. Sculptra is part dermal filler and part collagen induction therapy. With HA fillers, the results are immediate, though there is some initial swelling that can occur. Sculptra does not have HA, but rather works by instructing the body to start producing more collagen (a natural type of filler that our body creates) at the injection site. Full results are more subtle than HA fillers and take weeks to appear, but the results last longer than most HA filler at around two years. Those who are interested in fillers like Sculptra typically prefer a slow and steady, all-natural approach to turning back the clock.
Kybella: The New Kid on the Block
Kybella is an injectable like no other, made with a synthetic form of deoxycholic acid. This acid, like HA, is also naturally found in the body and is in charge of busting fat. Kybella is injected into the double chin area, technically known as submental area, using a specialized “stamping” device that provides numerous injections at once. More than one “stamping” is needed at each appointment, and most clients require about 3 – 6 appointments spaced one month apart for optimal results.
Deoxycholic acid burns away fat that causes double chins, and once that fat is gone it’s never coming back. However, Kybella is not a replacement for a healthy diet and exercise. Anyone of any weight can struggle with a double chin, and Kybella is a fantastic tool for getting rid of excess fat cells. Still, significant weight gain can cause nearby fat cells to grow and expand, so consider Kybella a complement to a healthy lifestyle.
Some clients want to know why so many sessions are needed with Kybella. It’s because a conservative approach is necessary. Since fat cells are vanquished for good, it’s paramount that you don’t wipe away too many (otherwise, an unnaturally hollow look is much worse than a double chin!). One month after each treatment, your provider can gauge progress and adjust the treatment so that you get the best results possible.
